Background

Bangladesh's rapid industrial growth from a low-income to a middle-income nation poses risks to worker safety and health. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a top priority, addressed through government regulations and buyer CSR demands. However, doubts persist about the effectiveness of audits in improving workplace safety. Little is known about actual audit practices, making it crucial to optimize resources for tangible OSH improvements.

Objective

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) are partnering on a research project funded by Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC). Our goal is to scrutinize audit practices in Bangladesh's garment and leather sectors. We seek to identify impactful audit methods for preventing Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues within companies. Starting with a survey, we plan to observe 100 audits, interview auditors, and assess the actual impact of audits in companies. Our aim is to share our findings with stakeholders through publications, offering practical insights for optimizing audits and testing new safety methods systematically.
